Left at 5:30 on the dot this morning—we are about halfway between Vegas and Reno—we will be turning off before Reno to cross through Tahoe. The smoke is so bad here that we cannot see the hills surrounding us-looks like a white out with about a mile visibility! DD says it is better in Sacramento—sure hope so. This is terrible. Smells Smokey, too.

Hi All,
I hope you are continuing to stay well. Jo Anne, thinking of you.
Joan, from your pictures, it looks like you are having a good time with family.
Sue, it blows my mind that they just blatantly go for a nomination even while RBG is still lying in state. I have beenfollowing Heather Cox Richardson on FB, she has a newsletter as well. She writes very succinctly and to the point.
I’m going to Ocracoke next weekend. Looking forward to a time to clear my head, read, and knit.

We are on the road—just dropped off the trailer. We had the best time—did nothing special—walked every morning, ate most meals outside on our “driveway patio” with DD and fam—talked and talked—what I miss most about Covid isolation! I literally cried leaving this morning. I love it there and honestly I would move if DH were willing—he always act ready and then when we find something doable he backs out. Would love to be close to DD.
DH’s birthday was yesterday so DD and I made a key lime pie for him—a recipe she found—and it was really good— crust was made with macadamia nuts and graham crackers. Her newly remodeled kitchen has made it so easy to cook together—meals were much easier—before having two working was worse than doing it by yourself.
Holly, Heather Cox Richardson is so good—I follow her posts as well—Sue, you should look her up—she is at Boston U I. Believe. Last night’s breaking news—OMG! No words.
JoAnne sees her dr today and says she will post an update afterward. She is recovering—anxious to be able to put weight on her leg again.
I won’t be able to see BF at all for a couple or three weeks—(while we only do backyard chats weekly, since that is all we do I will miss that). her grandson returns from army assignment in Italy today—he will have been on an airplane for ten hours—not a good situation. DD and family are so isolated—they see no one else unless it’s outside at a distance. All work from home and DGD16 does no socializing so we felt so comfortable—DD knows if she gets this it would be terrible because she is so overweight—they are really super scared of contact.

DH does not want to admit it but we are close to getting too old to do this trailer gig—he gets so exhausted and pushes himself anyway to drop dead tired—the night we got there was insane. I work hard to try to take some of it from him—I told him I’m willing to do this occasionally but it won’t be long before that is too much—I made up the bed and broke it back down this morning by myself—it’s ordinarily the dining area—but that kind of crawling around is not something I want to do on a regular basis.
I have missed my clay—DD does a lot of art—was making mandalas—gave me the two she made while we were there—I told her if we were together we would be collaborating on my clay work!
Holly, I know you will enjoy your trip this coming weekend! It helps to have something normal again even briefly!

Have been glazing pottery all day every day. Finally got to walk this morning—have not been sleeping too well so didin’t for a couple days.
DS in SLC had a bike accident today—mountain biking by himself. He broke his wrist ==both bones—and displaces it—had to walk out with a sling made of his jacket to get picked up by his SO—then to ER—said the pain was excruciating—may have surgery on Monday. So frustrated with him—he just plays and works too hard for his body!
So tired of cooking—but I’ll grill salmon again tonight and make some baby Lima beans I guess—
Trying to get all this pottery glazed so we can fire on the weekend. I have three more little bowls to do and then I’m ready.
Hoping JoAnne had good news at the dr.—have not heard.
How was your weekend away, Holly?
Sue, don’t you long for a day to be able to eat out again!?
DSIL came to Vegas the day after we left CA_—his dad wandered away and was found unconscious by the police—finally the hospital managed to figure out who he was and called DSIL’s mom—he is in the hospital—was in ICU—they think there was some brain bleed—having MRI today—he had a head injury when DSIL was 12 and has the mental capacity of about an 11 year old—she has stood by him all these years. Given up her life really. So hoping he isn’t going to require even more care from her—

Hi!
It's been very nice few days here, sunny, warm and not humid.
I hope Jojo is doing well after her check up with Dr.
Joan, glad you had such a good time on your trip. You always enjoy being with all the girls. Your DS gets injured so often, was he like this growing up too?
Holly, how was your trip? Did you go with your family and/or BF?
My sister, BIL and 3rd nephew flew to New Orleans this weekend for 4 day trip. They got the tickets back in March and decided to go through with it. I'm nervous for them, but they are wearing masks.
There was a mini high school get together Saturday, maybe 5-7 women total, both my Sue friends went. I think people are getting tired of being careful, but to me that is when it's most dangerous. Now is time to buckle down. Plus, cases in PA have been rising and that's concerning to me.
We joined doordash last month and we've been ordering out once a week. We usually always have leftovers for 2 more days so I don't have to cook. I'm also getting bored and tired of cooking. There are hundreds of philly restaurants available now, so we're able to order from ones that were kind of out of the way and weren't worth the effort.
The people in the current administration are falling like flies, so many people getting the virus, more each coming day. It's crazy. And now Trump is the only person in the history of the world to be on steroids, remdesivir and regeneron all at the same time, no one can say for sure if there would be no adverse side effects. The steroid he is on can affect the mind, cause depression, etc.
This past week in politics has been exhausting, from SCOTUS nom, his taxes, to debate and virus.

Hi all, Dr.’s visit was great! I am able to weight bear now on my right foot. All of the new x-rays looked good- no displacement of pelvis and she pointed out that me where some of the new bone being layer down could be seen. Just being able to place my foot flat on the floor is wonderful. I do have a limp but NO pain. The doc was amazed that all the pain is gone. PT says that her BJ pal os now to get me to walk without a limp. I have a bunch of exercises that I am doing faithfully. I really want this to be over!
Holly- what trip are you taking?
Joan - so sorry about your son. Will his arm cause a great deal of problem with his job? Is it his dominate arm. Prayers going up that he will not have to have surgery and that if he does or does not,he will heal swiftly and completely.
Sue- when all the statue toppling was going on, I meant to ask , were any of the Franklin stayed or any of the Philly monuments harmed? Have had that on my mind.
Holly - started a sweater ( cardigan) for California DGD
She is now in Texas in her old school. DDIL and her are living with DDIL’s parents so she can go to-face-to-face school. DDIL cannot deal with the virtual school in California. She and DGD were fighting all the time about it. If the schools in California orb next year , they will eobsbly go back. DS is visiting whenever he can.

So good to hear from both of you, JoAnne and SUe!
Awesome news about your leg and weight bearing! Will give you so much more mobility!
Covid is just tearing families apart—so sad to think your DDIL and DGD are having to live away from DS—was just talking to BF and her DDIL is a hS teacher and is so frustrated. Some kids are logging on but she knows are not attending as they do not participate—if they log on they have to be marked present. Vegas just is not well prepared for this. DGD in CA is getting so much better instruction on line that DGS here is. More accountability built in. But Vegas waffled and thought they’d do in person—the city went bonkers and fought it and the board then made decision to go virtual—well, by then they lost good planning time. What a mess.
We too are ordering out once a week—DH usually wants Grimaldis pizza and I get a large salad—it’s fine with me—just so I get a break occasionally.
I am reading Pachinko—wow, really good novel!
I’ve missed my walk the past couple days—bad air quality and my asthma doesn’t like it so have not wanted to exacerbate it.
Planted 6 broccoli plants, 2 cabbage, and 2 cauliflower yesterday. My snap peas are finally starting to grab the grate to climb. We unloaded the kiln today and I got two bowls that I really like—so will do the set for DS in SLC in that glaze—also got a couple others I liked but will change up a bit how I’m making them.
Worried that I was getting Covid two days ago as I had terrific head ache and ear aches and head congestion something terrible—kept taking temps—nothing—took a benadryl and got a really good night’s sleep and woke up feeling fine. But the air was better that day—so I think my allergies are just reacting strongly to air quality.
DS in SLC will have surgery tomorrow at 11 — one bone did not get aligned quite right for complete range of motion and good healing—they will insert a plate and a rod. He had a Covid test and passed as negative so it is scheduled.
Have a feeling Holly is enjoying her family time away!

Joan - wonderful to know he made it through the surgery ok. Like you say - now healing. My neighbor fell off a roof and did similar damage to his wrist. Happened in July. He is doing great but still wears a Velcro brace to give it stability. Hope your son does not have too much pain

Hi All,
I got back around 10:30 last night. It was a good trip. We ate really well. Fresh seafood and authentic Mexican food made by my brother’s gf’s mom. It was really nice to get away from work for awhile. I read The Giver of Stars by JoJo Moyes. It was really good. “I went with my parents to see my brother. He is a chef at one of the restaurants on Ocracoke. BF didn’t go since it’s such a long trip.
Jo Anne, so glad you are feeling better! I know you will be glad to be past this. I practiced a scarf pattern while I was at the beach. It just didn’t work well with the burgundy color yarn. I am going to try something different.
Joan, glad the surgery is behind him. The deer have finally found my garden. They ate the tops off the sweet potatoes. They’re about ready anyway, so it won’t hurt them too much. The peppers have thrived since I pulled the tomatoes.
Sue, that’s the good part about a big city— lots of good restaurant choices. NC spiked in cases this week. I think it will get pretty rough this winter, unfortunately.

Welcome home, Holly==so glad you went and had a nice break. This pandemic is so destructive of family life! And friendships—it just literally sucks.

Hope you all are doing well. I just dropped my iPad and shattered the screen! Glad the Apple store is finally open again. Guess we’ll be heading up there tomorrow.
Holly, have you read Pachinko? Sue? Oh my gosh it’s so, so good. So well written and so well done!
went to the foot doctor today—have arthritis in the top of my foot—the joints—a bone spur on my heel and plantar fasciitis. Exercise and a brace for night and inserts for the shoes—inserts feel so good! Have to go back in a month. But I get to keep walking so that’s good!

Hi!
We are having some warm and sunny days here. SO has been out on our balcony reading the past few days, enjoying it while it lasts.
We voted last week, went to the post office to mail our ballots. We normally use the mailbox down the street from our house but decided to go to post office. They recorded receipt of our ballots several days later. In PA, they can't open and count the votes until election day. Hopefully, Biden will have won by a landslide that night and PA votes won't matter!
Yesterday, I got my flu and shingles shot. It was my first time in a store in the US since last Dec!!! Can you believe it's been that long?
Jojo, I'm so relieved that you are recovering well. I know it must be so frustrating to not be able get around and to do all the things you're used to doing. You are normally so active. Ben Franklin's statues are fine, the only 2 that got taken down was a Columbus one and a former mayor of Philly (he was racist).
Joan, in Philly they are having some issues with some students not being able to get online and some school districts cannot supply laptops to everyone. I have read that in Florida, they are doing well with virtual classes because they have been set up for that for years due to hurricanes. Glad your DS is doing well post surgery. Sorry about your foot pain! I'll tell SO about Patchinko and he can order it. Holly, I remember you telling me your brother was interested in hospitality, but I did not know he is a chef now! Did he go to culinary school or just learn on the job? What kind of food is he cooking at the restaurant?
Cases in PA and Philly are rising a lot, back to where we were in April. Hospitalizations and ventilator use is up but nowhere near as high as before, so that's something at least. I think they know so much more now how to treat the virus. The problem is some of those who get over the virus will have long lasting and maybe permanent issues. And now there are more reported cases of people who have had virus twice. Joan, did you hear about the 23 yr guy in Nevada?

Yes, knew about the NV guy, Sue. My Montana friend who survived is now losing her hair—says her brain fog and ability to focus are gradually improving but the dr said the hair thing is a result of Covid. Her dr said she is a miracle case—80 years old. She thought she would not make it a few times.
My friends in Florida said there is still a lot of face to face school going on. Their son in law is teaching in one such school—it’s private tho. My cousin said Montana hospitals are slammed now—you know there are many towns in MT with no hospitals at all—in fact most rural areas have none and all go to Billings—miles and miles away! A brother in law of one of my school mates died of covid in Billings—they rushed him there from my home town (400+ miles away) but he didn’t make it. I think it is sobering up the MT crowd who thought it was all a hoax.
Wow, 10 months not in a store—you are really quarantined! I shop for groceries in three stores once a week early in the morning. Went to the foot and ankle dr.—have plantar fasciitis, heel bone spur, and arthritis in my left foot. Have to do a lot of exercises to avoid a cortisone shot in a month. wearing a brace to bed for as long as I can tolerate it—made it to 2 am last night. It forces my foot to stay at a right angle—no toe pointing.
Remember Susan Harvey from TX who used to be on WW thread? JoAnne, a dog attacked her smaller dog who was on a leash and she tried to fend off the bigger dog—her dog bolted at the dog also and pulled her over to the ground—broke two bones in her arm and literally broke a piece of bone off the broken bone. WIll have surgery soon. I told her about your dog experience—she said to wish you well.
Jordan is still so depressed—tomorrow I am going to call the head of the Asian Community Develpment Center—I met her a few years ago and she knows about Jordan—going to ask for help to find a better fit counselor for him—he quit going—didn’t really relate to her—but is realizing he really needs help. I think he needs meds as did she—he has put off seeing the psychiatrist—I’m quite worried about him. He came to his birthday backyard dinner—but a few minutes before texted me that he really didn’t want to come and didn’t feel like talking to people. I told him he had to—we were all waiting and dinner was totally ready—he came and all went super well—maybe I already told you all this—forgive me, if so—failed to look back and see. Anyway he ended up having a really good evening—I fear he’s going to become fearful of leaving his home—his brother is already that way. We always remarked to each other about how amazing it was that he was so successful in spite of having the worst childhood but I think that damage is now taking a toll.
DS is hiking a ton and taking lots of pictures. Cannot work, of course. Just so thankful he didn’t end up with concussion issues again.
