The 2 lbs. under rule was started 2-3 years ago, but didn't last long. Totally unrealistic. We are just advised to suggest a LT member may want to lower his/her goal if they keep losing a lot. Gospel however: no more than 2 lbs. over goal and not below their lowest BMI range..

So much for my plan to stay in weight loss mode once I get back to goal. I wanted at least a 5 lbs under goal cushion.

i agree with luanne (and WW stance) that the whole point of the 6 week period is to learn how to maintain. not to keep losing like gangbusters. to me, the whole point of a goal weight is so you can get there and learn to stay there. not keep losing and then gain it back later because one never learned how to maintain.

I was told similar to what Clare said. That at the end of my 6 week maintenance that I needed to be within those 2 pound limits (up or down), but after the 6 weeks I could go a little below without any issues. However, if more than 2 pounds over I would need to pay. I do think the more than 2 pounds below will depend on where you weigh in and how they decided to do this. My leader said that they did not encourage Lifetimers to go too far below that 2 pound down limit, but if it is a reasonable amount they do not say anything or ask the Lifetime member to consider adjusting their goal.

I remember at one of the training sessions I went to when I was still working for WWers the subject of goal weight and maintenance came up. I remember one of the receptionists I knew, and worked with, on occasion, saying she had set her goal weight high (because someone told her she could get Lifetime sooner). Then once she got to goal she kept losing to her "personal" goal. She said she never learned how to maintain and she had struggled ever since.
I also remember working with a leader who believed firmly that people should pick as their goal the weight where they wanted to be. She didn't believe in the WWer goal and personal goal. However, if someone was insistent on setting their goal high and planned to go lower, she'd let them. As she told me, if she didn't do it they'd just find another leader who would.
This doesn't mean I'm against setting your goal high, if you don't know where you want to be, and then seeing what happens. Of course that's what I ended up doing the first time around and it didn't work............for me.

i'm also of the mindset to just pick a goal weight that you really want instead of a goal weight for WW and then some other lower weight that one thinks will magically make them happy once they get there.

adding that when i made lifetime, i picked a goal weight that i felt i could comfortably maintain. and that i did, until pregnancy of course. my WW goal and my personal goal were one in the same.

If so, when you get back to goal you don't have to go through maintenance again. You are free to continue losing below goal weight (as long as not below the bottom of the range). When I got back to goal, I hadn't been at goal in over 20 years. Still, I didn't have to go through maintenance again. When DH got to goal he wanted to lose some below it. He made sure that end of 6 weeks he wasn't more than 2 pounds below his goal weight. Since then he has continued to lose and is several pounds below his goal weight.

My official "weight" is the one at meetings, even now when I only weigh in once a month in order to stay free. I like to be around 150 on my home scale. The cushion is to allow for clothes and variations in weight.

Gospel however: no more than 2 lbs. over goal and not below their lowest BMI range.. Just to add, unless it's changed. You could go below the bottom of your range, with a note from your doctor. And in fact, if your weight started dropping below that, and you didn't get a note, your membership would be terminated. I never experienced that while I was working for WWers, but it was in our written information.

Interesting array of responses.
I made Lifetime in 1976. Back then maintenance was EIGHT weeks. The program we were on (“The Heinz Plan” where they started adding things like limited wine, etc.), had a maintenance food booklet that had eight lists numbered 1 through 8. List 1 had foods that were 50 calories a serving; list 2 foods were 100 calories…up to list 8 with 400 calorie foods. Week one you added one List 1 food per day; week 2 you added one List 2 food OR two List 1 foods, etc. through week eight.
My goal range was 166 to 184. I kept losing weight and in week eight I was 157 (too thin for my body). However, nothing was said back then about “within 2 pounds” and I received my Lifetime status.
In week eight my leader told me to add another 50 calories a day and keep doing that until the weight stabilized. Sadly, she didn’t think to suggest that the extra food be something I didn’t like a lot…so like most members I added 50 calories of cookies…then 100 calories of cookies…etc. When I got back up to my goal weight it sure was tough giving up those cookies!
Oh…one more thing—
A friend in my meeting is painfully thin. I believe she has an eating disorder. She is below the bottom of her goal range and has brought doctor’s notes setting her goal weight lower than the bottom several times. The last time she did this, her doctor tolder “that’s it…don’t ask me again” and the WW staff told her the absolultely would not accept any notes for an even lower weight.
Her solution? If she knows she’s fallen below her doctor-specified goal weight, she puts rolls of quarters in her pockets before weigh-in.
There’s always a way to game the system if you’re under the goal weight—I wish there was a way to do that when you’re over!

sounds like that lady with the rolls of quarters needs some psychological help. wtf. i'm surprised the doctor even said ok more than once.

i think one thing people lose sight of when they get that obsessed with losing weight and going lower and lower is that it doesn't even look good anymore. like diminishing returns or something. the face ends up looking like the crypt keeper and all gaunt and old.

The other thing they lose site of, when the are in their later years (this friend is about 75) is that they’ve left their bodies no fat reserves to see them through any health crisis.

I made goal in 2011 and the 2# under or over rule was applied on the 6th week if you wanted to make goal. I had to leave my shoes on. When I was 17# under goal the leader reduced my goal by 7# she felt a 10# wiggle room was enough. I begrudgingly agreed. She was right. I have worked my way up to goal and probably would have gone even higher if she hadn't insisted on lowering my goal.
